Back to Home
I have a high tolerance for cherry, which is lucky because the fruit is everywhere right now. Most home scents go syrupy fast, but Apotheke’s Bitter Cherry Classic doesn’t giggle. It smirks. On the first burn in my small living room, the throw settled at a confident medium, enough to frame the space without steamrolling it, and the wick behaved like a candle that cost more than $48 for 296 g.
The opening is tart black cherry, pucker-up rather than pie-filling. A lift of cardamom flickers in and keeps the fruit from collapsing into gloss. Then the base starts to flex, patchouli with that cocoa-dusted shadow, creamy sandalwood and tonka that round the edges without turning the whole thing into a dessert. There is an earthy pulse that reads as black violet to my nose, a little damp, a little purple, the kind of nuance that makes you lean in.
And yes, there is oud and smoked vanilla. Before you flinch, think less barn and more lacquered wood. The oud is restrained, like a leather jacket you drape over a silk dress, and the smoked vanilla is quiet and adult, caramelized rather than cupcake. Together they push the cherry out of the teenage bedroom and into a dim lounge with low ceilings and soft lamps.
If cherry reminds you of cough syrup, this will probably still be too cherry. If you crave a truly gourmand, frosting-sweet candle, look elsewhere. But if you want fruit with backbone, spice, and a gently smoky finish, Bitter Cherry Classic is a solid bet for cool evenings, books that deserve your attention, and rooms that could use a little lipstick.
Wear-at-home pairing ideas, a cashmere sweater, a deep berry lip, a record that crackles just enough. I burned it on a rainy Sunday and it turned my apartment into a story I wanted to stay in. Not a sugar rush, a slow wink.
Purchased by me, burned twice, no regrets. The name may say cherry, but the mood says after hours. And that is exactly the kind of bait I fall for.
